The Legislative Assembly is a public building where Canberrans can gather to watch and participate in decision-making that affects their lives. The Covid-19 pandemic reminded us how important it is to keep public spaces like these as healthy as possible to ensure our democracy remains open to all.
What we're doing
We have a range of controls to manage risks associated with contracting communicable diseases like Covid-19, influenza, and the common cold while in the Assembly building. These include:
- We won't allow people into the building who have tested positive for Covid-19 or have cold- or flu-like symptoms.
- We have increased the fresh air intake in our building's air conditioning system from to 50%, which means there is more fresh air coming into the building, cycling out existing air faster.
- Surgical face masks are available at the building's public and staff entrances.
- Hand sanitiser is available at entry points and throughout the building.
- We have green signs up around the building encouraging good personal hygiene, and
- Contact points and meeting rooms are cleaned regularly.
What you can do to help
As a visitor to the Assembly building, you play an important part in keeping our space healthy. You can help us do this by:
- Staying home if you test positive for Covid-19, if you have cold- or flu-like symptoms, feel unwell, or are a close contact of someone who has tested positive for Covid-19.
- Sanitise your hands regularly while in the building.
- Be mindful of your distance from other people and their personal space in rooms with crowds.
- Respect others' choices if they wear a mask while in the building.
If you are unwell or feel uncomfortable coming into the building, you can still watch proceedings or appear as a witness at a public hearing.
- You can watch proceedings live or on demand with our broadcast website: broadcast.parliament.act.gov.au.
- You can ask to appear by video at a public hearing by contacting the Committee Office by emailing committees@parliament.act.gov.au or calling (02) 6205 0445.
